How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel
Upload the statement as it came from your bank, convert it, and check the totals before you use the sheet.
- Step 1
Upload the statement PDF
Choose the PDF from your bank, a downloaded e-statement or a scan of a printed statement. If the PDF has a password, enter it when asked; it is only used in your browser to open the file.
- Step 2
Convert all pages into one table
The whole statement is read together, so a transaction table that runs over several pages comes back as one table with its header kept once.
- Step 3
Check balances and download
Compare the opening balance, closing balance and a few transactions with the PDF, then download XLSX, XLS or CSV for Excel and Google Sheets, or OFX, QBO or QFX for accounting software.
Multi-page statements become one transaction table
A bank statement repeats its column header on every page, and copying page by page leaves you with broken rows and duplicate headers. This converter reads the statement as one document, so the transactions of every page are joined in order under a single header row.
Opening and closing balances, page numbers and the bank's running page headers are left out of the transaction table. Keep the PDF open while you check the first and last transactions and the closing balance.
Password-protected and scanned statements
Many banks send e-statements as password-protected PDFs, often with a password built from your name and date of birth. When you choose such a file, the page asks for the password and opens the PDF in your browser. The password is not uploaded.
Not sure of the password? See the bank statement password formats for SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis and other banks, or let the finder there try them for you.
Printed statements scanned to PDF work too. Scan in good light and keep the pages straight; blurred or skewed pages are the most common cause of misread digits.
Free pages and pricing
Try the converter on the first pages of a statement free once a day. To convert every page, use credits from a plan or a one-time pack with no subscription; each page counts once. See pricing for current packs and plans.
Importing into accounting software? Download OFX, QBO for QuickBooks or QFX for Quicken from the download menu. Converting another kind of PDF? Use the PDF to Excel converter, scanned PDF to Excel or extract tables from PDF. Working from photos instead? Use the picture to Excel converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?
Upload the PDF above, convert it and download the XLSX file. The statement's pages are joined into one transaction table, so you do not have to copy each page by hand. Check the closing balance against the PDF before relying on the sheet.
Can I convert a scanned or photographed bank statement?
Yes, as long as it is a PDF. Scanned pages are read as images, so a sharp, straight scan gives the best result. Amounts and dates are usually read reliably; long narrations can pick up small spacing differences, so review them.
My bank statement PDF has a password. Will it work?
Yes. When you choose a protected PDF, the page asks for its password and opens the file in your browser. The password itself is not uploaded; the pages are sent without the protection.
Is the bank statement converter free?
You can convert the first pages of a statement free once a day to check the result. Converting every page costs credits per page, or a one-time pack that needs no subscription and no account. The converter shows the cost before you start.
How many pages can I convert at once?
One statement of up to 20 pages per conversion. For a longer statement, split the PDF into parts, convert each and paste the sheets together in Excel.
Will the Excel file keep debit and credit in separate columns?
The table keeps the columns of your statement, so separate debit and credit columns stay separate and a single amount column stays single. Number formats are copied as printed, including thousands separators.
Can I import the result into QuickBooks, Quicken, Xero or Tally?
Yes. Open the download menu and choose OFX for Xero, Sage and most accounting apps, QBO for QuickBooks or QFX for Quicken; you check the columns and the first transactions before the file is written. For Tally and other tools, download CSV or XLSX and map the date, narration, debit, credit and balance columns during import.
Is my bank statement kept private?
Files are used only to produce your spreadsheet. Read the privacy policy for how long uploads are kept, and avoid uploading statements you are not allowed to share.
