VTT vs SRT subtitle formats

Both formats store timed captions, but WebVTT adds browser-oriented metadata and positioning that SRT cannot represent.

What happens during subtitle conversion

Each valid WebVTT cue becomes a sequential SRT block with comma-based milliseconds and UTF-8 text.

WebVTT metadata is removed

WEBVTT headers plus NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks are not written to SRT because SubRip has no equivalent structures.

Cue times are normalized

WebVTT periods become SRT commas, optional cue settings are removed, and cue blocks receive sequential numbers.

Basic formatting can remain

Bold, italic and underline tags can be preserved. Voice, class, ruby and inline WebVTT timestamp tags are removed.

Conversion does not translate text

The spoken language and caption wording remain unchanged. Only the subtitle file structure is converted.

VTT to SRT converter FAQ

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Choose one or more VTT files above, adjust optional timing and formatting settings, then select Convert to SRT and download the completed subtitles.

Is this VTT to SRT converter free?

Yes. You can convert batches within the displayed file count and size limits without signing in.

Are my subtitle files uploaded?

No. WebVTT parsing and SRT generation happen locally in your browser, so subtitle text does not leave your device.

Can I batch convert multiple VTT files to SRT?

Yes. Add up to 20 VTT files, convert the queue, then download them separately or save all completed SRT files in a ZIP.

What is the difference between VTT and SRT?

VTT is designed for web video and supports cue settings, metadata and styling. SRT uses numbered caption blocks and has wider support in desktop players and editors.

Does conversion change subtitle timing?

Not by default. Start and end times are preserved. Enter a positive offset to delay every cue or a negative offset to display cues earlier.

Are WebVTT styles preserved in SRT?

Basic bold, italic and underline tags can remain. WebVTT STYLE and REGION blocks, cue positioning, voice tags, classes and inline timestamps are removed.

Does VTT to SRT conversion translate subtitles?

No. Conversion changes the subtitle format only; it does not translate, transcribe or rewrite the caption text.

Can I convert WebVTT to SRT on Mac or Windows?

Yes. The converter runs in a modern browser on macOS, Windows, Linux and mobile without installing subtitle software.

Why add a UTF-8 BOM to SRT?

Some older Windows subtitle players use the BOM to recognize UTF-8. Leave it disabled for a clean UTF-8 file, or enable it when a player displays non-English characters incorrectly.
