GIF to APNG Converter with Full Animation Preservation

Turn an animated GIF into one animated PNG file in your browser. Preserve frame order, timing, and transparency, choose lossless or smaller output, then preview the APNG before downloading.

Decoding and APNG encoding run locally. The animation is never uploaded.

No APNG created yet

The output remains animated and keeps each GIF frame delay.

How to convert GIF to APNG

Choose an animated GIF, set the APNG color, width, and speed options, then encode and preview the animation locally.

01

Choose an animated GIF

Select or drop one .gif file up to 25 MB and 200 frames.

02

Set APNG output

Choose lossless or reduced-color output, a maximum width, and original, slower, or faster timing.

03

Preview and download

Encode one animated PNG locally, verify its motion and dimensions, then download the .apng file.

GIF to animated PNG controls

APNG keeps animation in one PNG-compatible file and supports richer color and alpha transparency than GIF.

ControlSettingEffect
FramesUp to 200Preserves the complete GIF animation instead of exporting only the first frame
ColorsLossless, 256, or 128Keeps exact composited pixels or reduces colors for a smaller APNG
Maximum widthOriginal, 1280, 800, or 480 pxResizes every frame consistently while preserving aspect ratio
Speed0.5x, 1x, or 2xChanges delays without dropping or duplicating frames

GIF vs APNG: what improves

APNG removes GIF's format limits without inventing detail that was already absent from the source.

CharacteristicSourceOutput
AnimationTimed GIF framesTimed frames in one animated PNG file
ColorUp to 256 indexed colors per frameFull-color lossless pixels or an optional reduced palette
TransparencyOne-bit transparent or opaqueFull alpha-capable format; source transparency is retained
CompressionLZWPNG DEFLATE compression, often sharper for interface animation
CompatibilityNearly universalSupported by current major browsers; some older apps show only the first frame

Private, disposal-aware APNG encoding

Each GIF patch is composited according to its disposal method before the full frames are encoded into APNG.

Correct GIF frame composition

Disposal methods 2 and 3 are applied before capture so partial GIF patches do not leave trails or missing regions.

Real APNG output

All frames and delays are stored in one animated PNG file, not a ZIP of unrelated still PNG images.

Lossless and compact modes

Lossless output keeps the rendered GIF pixels exactly; optional 256- and 128-color modes can reduce file size.

Explicit local limits

Files are limited to 25 MB, 200 frames, and 100 megapixel-frames to keep browser conversion responsive.

GIF to APNG converter FAQ

How do I convert GIF to APNG?

Choose an animated GIF above, select the color, maximum width, and speed settings, then choose Convert to APNG. Preview the animation and download the .apng file.

Does GIF to APNG keep the animation?

Yes. Every decoded and composited GIF frame is encoded in order with its frame delay. The result is one animated PNG, not a static PNG or frame archive.

Is animated PNG the same as ordinary PNG?

APNG extends PNG with multiple timed frames. Current browsers animate it, while software without APNG support normally displays its first frame as an ordinary PNG.

Does GIF to APNG improve quality?

It prevents additional palette loss when lossless mode is selected and supports richer alpha transparency, but it cannot restore colors or smooth alpha already removed from the source GIF.

Does converting GIF to APNG increase file size?

It can. Size depends on frame content and dimensions. APNG is often efficient for interface animation, while lossless full frames may be larger. Use 256 or 128 colors or reduce width when needed.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. GIF decoding, frame composition, APNG encoding, preview, and download all run locally in this browser.
