Windows OCR from screenshots and image files

Windows OCR turns words in a screenshot or scanned image into editable text. Use text output for paragraphs, labels, and notes; choose spreadsheet output when rows and columns matter. The converter above runs in your browser and sends the image to our OCR service.

Windows 11 OCR with Snipping Tool

For a quick text capture, Windows 11 has a built-in route:

1. Press Win + Shift + S and capture the required area.
2. Open the capture in Snipping Tool and select Text actions.
3. Select text or use Copy all text, then paste and proofread it.

Microsoft's Snipping Tool documentation states that text recognition is performed locally. Its Windows 10 instructions describe screenshot capture without the Windows 11 Text actions workflow. Check your app version rather than assuming every Windows 10 installation has the same OCR controls.

Windows OCR shortcuts and language packs

Sources: Windows keyboard shortcuts and PowerToys Text Extractor. PowerToys lets you change its activation shortcut and preferred language. It recognizes only languages with an installed OCR language pack.

Chinese screen OCR on Windows 11

For Chinese or Mandarin screen text, check the available OCR packs and select the appropriate script or locale. A Chinese keyboard alone does not establish OCR support. Microsoft documents this read-only query in an administrator Windows PowerShell window:

Free OCR software for Windows 10 and local workflows

Microsoft supports PowerToys installation on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or newer, with an x64 or ARM64 processor. Get the installer through Microsoft's documented channels, then enable Text Extractor. PowerToys is free and open source.

For Windows local OCR, choose a workflow that keeps source files on the device. This online tool requires an upload and internet connection. Review the privacy policy before uploading sensitive material.

A Windows OCR app, a screenshot utility, and an OCR engine serve different roles. Developers can use Microsoft's Windows.Media.Ocr API; that API is not a ready-made spreadsheet exporter. Choose the output and privacy requirements first when comparing the best OCR for Windows.

How to use Tesseract OCR in Windows

Start with the Tesseract installation guide. The project's download page distinguishes source code from third-party Windows installers, including UB Mannheim builds. Install the required language data and make the executable available on PATH.

In a terminal, this example reads an English screenshot and writes output.txt:

Windows PDF OCR and batch conversion

For a searchable PDF, OCRmyPDF documents native Windows, WSL, and Docker installation routes. Follow the current platform instructions and dependency requirements. A searchable PDF adds a text layer; it is a different deliverable from TXT, Word, or Excel.

This page accepts images. Export a PDF page as an image first, or capture the visible page at readable zoom. For many image tables, use batch OCR and check its plan limits. Automatic file renaming from recognized text and watched-folder processing are separate automation tasks, not features of this converter.

DeepSeek-OCR on Windows or in a browser

The official DeepSeek-OCR repository publishes a CUDA and PyTorch environment and a Linux vLLM wheel. Its examples use GPU inference. This is a developer setup, so check Windows or WSL compatibility, GPU drivers, and the chosen inference package before downloading models. The documented environment does not establish a universal minimum GPU memory requirement.

A browser interface still needs a running inference service. This page uses our configured OCR backend; it does not install DeepSeek-OCR on your PC or promise that particular model.
