Animated WEBP files keep their frame order and timing when supported by this browser.

How to convert WEBP to GIF

Choose a WEBP image or animation, set GIF color and size options, then convert and preview the result locally.

01

Choose a WEBP file

Select or drop one static or animated .webp file up to 25 MB.

02

Set GIF output

Choose 64, 128, or 256 colors, limit the width when needed, and keep or change animation speed.

03

Preview and download

Encode the frames locally, inspect the resulting animation and file size, then download the .gif file.

Animated WEBP to GIF controls

GIF has stricter color and transparency limits than WEBP, so the important output decisions stay visible.

WEBP vs GIF: what changes

WEBP is newer and usually smaller. GIF remains useful when maximum animation compatibility matters.

Private GIF encoding for real animations

The converter decodes frames and builds the GIF in this browser instead of sending the source to a conversion server.

Animation-aware decoding

When the browser exposes animated WebP decoding, every frame is read in order and written with its source timing.

Fast GIF palette generation

A dedicated GIF encoder quantizes each rendered frame to the selected palette size and applies standard LZW encoding.

Honest transparency handling

GIF cannot represent semi-transparent pixels. Alpha values are reduced to fully transparent or fully opaque output.

Explicit browser limits

Files are limited to 25 MB, 120 frames, and 80 megapixel-frames to keep local conversion responsive.

WEBP to GIF converter FAQ

How do I convert WEBP to GIF?

Choose a .webp file above, select the GIF color count, maximum width, and animation speed, then choose Convert to GIF. Preview the result and download it locally.

Can animated WEBP be converted to animated GIF?

Yes in browsers that support animated WebP through the ImageDecoder API, including current Chromium-based browsers. Frame order and timing are preserved up to the displayed limits. Other browsers fall back to the first decoded frame.

Why can WEBP to GIF reduce image quality?

GIF supports at most 256 colors per frame, while WEBP can contain millions. Color gradients and photographic animation may show banding after palette reduction.

Does GIF preserve WEBP transparency?

Only partially. WEBP supports smooth alpha transparency, but GIF pixels can only be fully transparent or fully opaque. Semi-transparent edges must be simplified.

Will the GIF be larger than the WEBP?

Often yes. WEBP uses newer compression, while animated GIF uses an older format optimized for compatibility. Reducing the output width or color count can lower GIF size.

Is the WEBP uploaded?

No. Frame decoding, palette creation, GIF encoding, preview, and download all happen locally in your browser.
