Japanese OCR turns text in a photo, scan or screenshot into an editable draft. Use text output for a menu, notice, book excerpt or dialogue. Choose spreadsheet output for a price list or other table. Keep the source beside the result: recognition is a starting point for review, especially when several scripts share one image.

Vertical Japanese OCR and furigana: review the order

If vertical Japanese OCR seems to never work on a full page, first isolate the layout. A page may combine vertical columns, horizontal captions and small reading aids beside the main characters. Try one column or speech bubble at a time, without clipping the punctuation or furigana. Enlarging a blurry image cannot restore strokes that are missing from the source.

• Check the original direction and column sequence before joining the result.
• Decide whether you need the main text alone or the furigana separately; record that choice in your review notes.
• Keep uncertain characters marked for review instead of guessing from the surrounding sentence.

For a Japanese OCR reader to help you play a game, pause on a dialogue line, save a sharp screenshot and crop the text box. Remove unrelated interface labels and avoid capturing moving or fading text. Convert the crop, correct it, then use the Japanese in a dictionary or study note. This page processes uploaded images; continuous screen capture requires a separate tool.

The best OCR for Japanese games depends on the fonts and capture workflow. Compare the same dialogue samples, including small kana, outlined text and a difficult background. Record correction time as well as the initial result. A tool that works on one clean menu may still struggle with stylized dialogue.

Japanese OCR translation: extract first, translate second

To take Japanese OCR to English, review the Japanese transcription before translating. OCR identifies characters; translation interprets their meaning. A missed negative, number or speaker name can change the answer. This tool gives you editable Japanese text rather than an English translation or an image overlay.

Japanese PDF OCR: export a page before uploading

Check whether the PDF already lets you select Japanese text. If it does, copy a short passage and inspect the order first. For an image-only PDF, export the relevant page as PNG, JPG or TIFF and upload that image here. Keep the page number in the filename so you can put several excerpts back in order.

Manga OCR's official repository describes recognition of printed Japanese, including horizontal and vertical text, furigana and manga speech bubbles. It can watch clipboard images or a directory of captures. The project warns that longer passages may need smaller crops and that it can produce text even when no text is present. Its stated focus is printed text, so treat handwriting as a separate test.

For a configurable screen capture workflow on Windows, ShareX OCR documentation explains the Windows OCR language list. To add Japanese to OCR task settings, install the Windows language features that include OCR, reopen the OCR window and select Japanese when listed. Task settings → Capture → OCR controls the default recognition language. ShareX's own Windows OCR and a ShareX capture sent to Manga OCR are different recognition workflows.

If you prefer a command-line engine, Tesseract's official data repository includes a Japanese vertical model file. Installation and layout configuration are additional work; a model filename alone does not establish accuracy on your images.
