How to convert a bank statement PDF to OFX
The statement is converted first; the OFX file is written from its transactions after you check them.
- Step 1
Upload the statement PDF
Choose one bank or credit card statement of up to 20 pages, digital or scanned. A protected PDF asks for its password, which stays in your browser.
- Step 2
Convert, then choose OFX
After the conversion, open the download menu and choose OFX. The converter shows the columns it found and the first transactions.
- Step 3
Check and import
Fix a column or the date order if a row looks wrong, download the OFX file and import it into your accounting software.
What an OFX file is, and where it imports
OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is the standard file banks use to send transactions to accounting software. Each transaction carries its date, amount, description and an ID, so the software books it without any column mapping.
- Xero: Accounting > Bank accounts > Import a statement.
- QuickBooks Online: Banking > Upload transactions, then choose the file.
- Sage, MYOB, Wave, GnuCash, Moneydance and most budgeting apps import OFX the same way.
Using Quicken or QuickBooks Desktop? They expect QFX and QBO, which are OFX with an Intuit bank ID added.
Check the columns before you download
Before the file is written, the converter shows which columns it uses for the date, description and amounts, and the first transactions with money out below zero. Statements print amounts in different ways: one signed amount column, separate debit and credit columns, or an amount with Dr and Cr. Change a column or the date order there if a row looks wrong.
- Opening and closing balance lines are left out; only real transactions are written.
- A narration that wraps onto a second line is joined back into one description.
- Choose “Credit card” as the account type for card statements. If charges show up as money in, tick “Reverse signs”.
- Each transaction keeps the same ID every time you convert the statement, so importing it twice is flagged as a duplicate instead of booked twice.
OFX or CSV?
CSV needs you to map date, description and amount columns on every import, and debit and credit columns often have to be combined first. OFX already holds one signed amount per transaction, so the import is a single step. Pick CSV when your software has no OFX import or you want to edit rows in a spreadsheet first.
Free pages and pricing
The first pages of a statement convert free once a day, and that result downloads in every format, OFX, QFX and QBO included. Converting every page uses credits per page, or a one-time pack with no subscription. Each conversion takes one PDF of up to 20 pages. See pricing.
Other formats
The same converter also writes PDF to QBO and PDF to QFX, and the bank statement converter gives you Excel or CSV. Locked statement? See bank statement passwords.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF bank statement to OFX?
Upload the PDF above and convert it, then choose OFX in the download menu. Check that the date, description and amount columns are right in the preview and download the file.
Is the PDF to OFX converter free?
The first pages of a statement convert free once a day, and that result downloads as OFX too. Converting every page uses credits per page or a one-time pack without a subscription.
Which software imports OFX files?
Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, MYOB, Wave, GnuCash, Moneydance and most budgeting apps. Quicken and QuickBooks Desktop prefer QFX and QBO, which this converter also writes.
Does it work with scanned statements?
Yes. Every page is read with OCR, so scanned and photographed statements work as long as they are PDFs. Check amounts from blurred pages before importing.
What happens to debit and credit columns?
They are combined into one signed amount per transaction: debits become negative, credits positive. Statements with Dr and Cr markers or a single signed column are handled the same way.
Can I convert a credit card statement to OFX?
Yes. Choose Credit card as the account type before downloading. If charges come out as money in, tick Reverse signs.
Will importing the same statement twice create duplicates?
Each transaction gets the same ID every time the statement is converted, so accounting software recognises a second import as duplicates.
